Consider Getting a Real ID Next Time You’re at the DPS using DMV Slots

Are you familiar with the Real ID and why it might be important for you? It’s more than just renewing your driver’s license. As the May 2025 deadline approaches, here’s what you need to know to stay prepared.

What is a Real ID?
The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, established new security standards for issuing identification cards, such as driver’s licenses, in response to 9/11. In Texas, Real ID-compliant cards have been available since October 10, 2016. These cards feature a gold circle with a star in the upper right-hand corner, making them easy to identify.

Do I Need a Real ID to Fly Domestically?
Currently, a Real ID is not required for domestic flights. However, starting on May 7, 2025, you will need either a Real ID or another form of federal identification, like a passport, to board domestic flights.

How to Get a Real ID in Texas
To apply for a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or ID, visit a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office in person. You may also be eligible to renew your current license or ID online. While you can still use your unexpired Texas driver’s license or ID for driving and non-federal purposes, your next renewal will provide you with a Real ID-compliant card.

If you’re having trouble finding an appointment, DMV Slots is here to help! Our service sends you real-time alerts for available DMV appointments so you can book as soon as possible and avoid long wait times.

Does a Real ID Replace a Passport?
No, Real IDs are valid for domestic travel only. You will still need a passport for international flights or travel outside of U.S. borders.

What Does a Real ID Look Like?

If you check your current Texas driver’s license or ID and see a gold star in the top right corner, you’re already Real ID-compliant. If your ID doesn’t have the gold star, you’ll receive one at your next renewal or can request a replacement.

Make sure to check your ID before the May 2025 deadline to ensure you’re prepared for any travel plans! And don’t forget, DMV Slots can assist you in finding the earliest available appointment.
